This is a Pakhawaj that uses metals hooks instead of the traditional rawhide strap to attach the heads. This makes tuning and changing the heads much easier. 

Also these drums have a gob already on the inside of the bass head, unlike the strapped pakhawaj which requires you to make a wheat paste gob each time you play.

These drums are very popular in ashrams and are often called "Mridangam" (not to be confused with the Carnatic Mridang). They are made of seasoned and durable wood.
