There is a moratorium on the wood used in tablas. Shisham wood is now considered a part of exotic species of plants. It is now very hard to export shisham tablas out of India. Shisham is a part of Dalbergia plant species. Hence we had to move to a wood that produces as good a sound as Shisham.

A neem/mahogany tabla with a well made, durable head. Mumbai-made drums have heads that are thicker than heads made in Kolkata. Consequently we recommend these drums for beginners, since the heads will absorb a lot of playing without the head giving out.
