The nagaswaram or nadaswaram is a large double reed instrument that is very popular is South India. It is the Carnatic equivalent of the Hindustani shenai, although it is more than twice the size of a shenai. This is a very loud instrument, often played outside for weddings and festivals. It is considered a very auspicious instrument for such occasions. It is also often played in temples. The main body is about 3 feet long, and made of ebony. The "bell" is made of rosewood.
